Advance our industry as a whole by learning, growing and supporting your own business as well as your colleagues!

IAPBP Image Critique Night!

This is not a competition, but rather the second year of an annual evaluation event that enables you to submit your work to see if you are where you want to be in your photographic journey.

What IS this event?

    • This is a live, on-line Image Evaluation Event where a team of Review Panelists (expert judges as well as newly trained artists) will give live feedback on individual images. No scores will be given, just quality feedback that helps not only the artist who submitted the image(s) but also all viewers as they observe the Review Panel evaluate multiple images continuously over the course of many hours.
    • This event was designed to educate and build confidence so that you can push the boundaries, value yourself as a professional and capture award-winning images.

What to expect from this event:

    • Artist growth through your own image evaluation and observing hours of your colleagues’ image feedback and reviews
    • Confidence that the impact of your image won’t be muddled or glossed over by being amidst a large gallery of work
    • Because your feedback is spoken and not written, you can expect that it will be more thorough than that of the IAPBP Annual Image Competition feedback one-liners.
    • Our Review Panel will consist of a large team of trained judges with 3-4 live, on-screen, at a time. These small teams will be intentionally paired together to create groups of both experienced judges as well as artists who are stepping into a judging position for the first time.
    • Our Judges’ Training Course will ensure that every reviewer has the same idea of what merits quality work with exceptional technical skill and artist intention.

Each individual image will receive its due attention and will be open for discussion by our reviewers. Your submissions will not be dismissed or glossed over.

What is included in this event:

    • 1 FREE submission is available to all members in current good standing with the Association.
    • This event is available LIVE to all members regardless of submission.
    • You are able to purchase up to 3 additional entries for $25USD. This means for $25USD you can submit one image or 3, however the price is the same.

If you’d like to submit more than 3 images, you are able to purchase more images for an additional $25USD. Submission are purchased in lots of 3.  Simply fill the form out again.

    • Any member who has paid for submissions will receive a playback recording of the event.

Evaluation Components

This event consists of two separate Evaluation Pathways: General Image Feedback and Competition Image Feedback.

  • Members of IAPBP are able to choose which path they participate in and/or watch live.
  • The General Image Feedback and the Competition Image Feedback paths will be broadcast live for all members of IAPBP to observe. Members who submit images to be evaluated will receive access to the recordings of the paths they participated in.

General Feedback

Submitting your image for General Feedback invites our judges to look for overall image quality in the context of what you would be giving your clients.

General Feedback Includes:

technical skill
highlights

Competition Feedback

Submitting your image for Competition Feedback invites our judges to assume that you are considering entering your image into a competition. This feedback is designed to be more specific; submit here for thorough feedback based on entering prestigious competitions and to better train your eye for what is and is not competition worthy.

Competition Feedback Includes:

everything in General Feedback PLUS

Event  Benefits

Receive Personal, Feedback On Your anonymous Images

By submitting your images you will create the opportunity to receive constructive feedback on your work which will help increase your skill level for clients and prepare you for future competition participation. But the best part is no one (not even the reviewers themselves) will know it is your image unless you tell them!

Learn From Your Peers’ Work

Watching hours of live judging comes with so much wisdom and education! You will learn from other styles of work, you will see elements in images differently than you ever have before, and because you get to hear the feedback from the judges on other images, you can learn how to avoid common mistakes in your own images in the future.

Beginner Friendly Event

Submitting your images into the evaluation event is where we can all start, beginner or advanced. For our friends too nervous to jump into the competition world, we are keeping this event anonymous to create a more safe space for you.

One Image Reviewed (LIVE) At A Time

Watching judging live is one of the most rewarding experiences. It provides instant gratification, there is no waiting for results, and a voice gives context to the words. No short one liners of “this is beautiful!” We actually want to share with you how you can make a beautiful images spectacular!

Submit Images from Any Year

There are no timeframes on the image evaluation, unlike the Image Competition and Birth Photographer of the Year competition. We also encourage you to submit images you’ve previously submitted into other competitions if you would like additional feedback on them.

Apply to Become A Judge

Level-up your resume and experience as an artist! Free access to our Judges Training Course will be granted to all approved applicants. Judges will be able to submit their work into the Image Evaluation Event even if they are invited to be a part of the Official Review Team.

Amanda Ditzel
Photographer & Doula

Amanda is a birth and documentary artist based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Equipped with three wildly unique birth experiences of her own, this path has shaped her into the advocate and riveting storyteller she is today. Amanda has impacted and empowered birthing people in her area for nearly a decade. Her most treasured moment was photographing the very first clear drape cesarean in North Carolina. Twyla Ellis - 2021 IEEE Review Panelist
Twyla Ellis
Birth Photographer

I am a human, an artist, a keeper, a daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother.

I am committed to my journey. To my passion. To my heart song. Being in community with people, supporting birth, life and death, and honoring the journey of others through visual storytelling.

I feel most grounded when I am barefoot in the forest. But really, any nature will do, barefoot is a must though.

Gladys Garcia - 2021 IEEE Review Panelist
Gladys Garcia
Photographer & Doula

Gladys Garcia is a wife, homeschooling mother of four, birth photographer, doula and filmmaker based out of Central Florida. She is passionate about her faith in Jesus, living within her purpose, legacy making and helping others capture theirs in-the-making.

Gladys began birth work by supporting pregnant teen moms as a volunteer birth coach for a non-profit in 2002. After getting married and experiencing four amazing natural births, Gladys established Birth Hour Photography in 2016, passionate about birth advocacy and supporting women so they too could have positive, transformative childbirth experiences.  During the pandemic in 2020 she maximized opportunities and became a bilingual BirthBootCamp Certified Doula. Using her background in psychology and EMS, her multicultural background and life experiences, Gladys thrives in making deeper connections with clients, which allows her to capture raw, authentic moments of them truly embracing the power of vulnerability and the beauty in life’s tiniest moments.

...

With over 150 births of experience, Gladys uses her education, training and life story to empower and encourage women to tap into their God-given purpose and strength to impact the world around them. In addition to birth work, Gladys leverages her influence by mentoring other Women in Business, help the fight against Human Trafficking through a partnership with the Tim Tebow foundation and continues to volunteer with Youth in the community.

When she is not supporting other women, you will find her exploring outdoors with her family, reading, sipping on organic coffee or green juice, cuddled on the couch or around the fire making memories with her husband and children.

Hannah Palamara - 2021 IEEE Review Panelist
Hannah Palamara
Birth Photographer + Mentor

I am a dreamer and I feel deeply. I am an empath and strive for honest, meaningful connection. I work to be fully present in everything I do—in time spent with my children or with the women who welcome me into their birth space. Motherhood and mothering my children through the stages of their lives has taught me so much about myself. It has also led me on a journey of my own healing and self-development.

...

Now I am passionate about healthy eating and living, moving my body (fun fact: I do Olympic weightlifting!), and finding peace in nature. I am a true creative who gets distracted by sunsets and searches out pockets of light in houses. Between my three children and my work, I keep pretty busy. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

...

Growing up in Houston, TX I was raised to appreciate and partake in the arts as much as possible. I spent most of my time in dance and art classes, play rehearsal, the orchestra or violin and viola lessons. In college I received a degree in Viola Performance and Pedagogy, and after years of performing, recording, and teaching, I decided to raise a family. I have 4 kids, ages 13-20 and a husband who encourages me to follow through on all my crazy ideas. These special people have inspired me to pay attention to the little things, find and preserve joy in the day-to-day, and keep on keeping on no matter what. When people ask me how I became a birth photographer, I tell them that it was simply meant to be. My life as a mother and an artist intersected in 2011 when my sister-in-law invited me to document her birth. I photographed a lot of families back then, but that all changed very quickly once I realized my true calling. My love for documenting birth has evolved into a love for teaching birth photography. And when I’m not immersed in that work, I love to entertain, I love plants, and I love goofing around (read: embarrassing) with my kids.

Achievements: Austin’s Best Birth Photographer 2013-2019, Featured on television and in print in The Huffington Post, Midwifery Today, Redbook Magazine, People, FStoppers, CLICK, SELF, Cosmopolitan, ABC News, TODAY, Woman’s Day, and Hello Giggles, Keynote speaker at Off-Call in 2015 and 2017, Instructor at The Baby Summit in 2016, Both finalist and winner in prior IAPBP Image Competitions (2014/2017), Finalist in Lensculture’s Portait of the Year Competition 2017, Exhibited with Lensculture throughout Europe in 2018, Finalist in ClickinMom’s VOICE Collection 2017, Editor’s choice with National Geographic Your Shot’s “The Gift of Life” assignment 2017, 6th place in Birth, Shoot&Share in 2018 Competition, Founder of the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project Founder of Birthbound Photographer

Jelina Sonnenberg - 2021 IEEE Review Panelist
Jelina Sonnenberg
Birth Photographer

I am ever evolving as a human being and constantly learning which translates into everything I do. From birth work to bereavement work, birth photography and videography to doula work. I received my BA in Human Development/Counseling Services to pursue a career in therapy but changed my path after experiencing the birth of my little one in 2017 (like so many other birth workers have). I am a self proclaimed extroverted introvert, who thrives off realness and authenticity (with a dash of cussing and sarcasm), and snuggling any animal I can find. I believe in sustainability in birth work, showing value, and cultivating deep relationships with those I’m in community with. Because at the end of the day, this work is not something we can do alone.

How is this different from the Annual Image Competition and/or the Birth Photographer of the Year Competition?

  1. This is not a competition, but rather an opportunity to submit your work for review in our a Live Educational Event to see where you land in your own photographic journey.
  2. You can submit the same images you submitted into the competition to receive additional feedback, which we highly recommend!
  3. You can submit images you are considering entering into future competitions to receive feedback about how you could improve or adjust for a greater chance of winning.
  4. There are no categories since this isn’t a competition.
  5. All styles are welcome to be entered and no image will be compared to any other image.
  6. We will be taking great care to educate our review panel members on the difference between fine art and documentary style imagery and the difference each image plays in how we review the images.
  7. This is an evaluation. Only you can review the feedback given and decide if you want to accept the suggested advice or not. That’s the best part about an evaluation! You can take it or leave it!
  8. This is an educational event and all entrants will be able to watch and observe every single image evaluation in real-time.
  9. Images can be submitted anonymously and watermarks will not be shown during the Live Broadcast. Please note that images that have been submitted into the 2021 Image Competition are currently published with a watermark, so if you submit the same image it is possible someone will find out the artist.
  10. These images will not be published in a final gallery. They will appear once in the review and not again unless entrants give permission for IAPBP to use their image(s) in future publications.
  11. This educational event is a collaborative effort of Exposing Birth (Birth Photographer of the Year Competition) and IAPBP (Birth Photography Image of the Year Competition) to build confidence, level-up, and elevate the birth photography industry as a whole. We hope you will join us!

Still have questions? Email membership@birthphotographers.com and we will be happy to help!

Still Unsure What To Expect?

This video below gives an idea of what you can expect from this event. Live judging, educational masterclass presentations, camaraderie behind the scenes in our Members’ Only Facebook Group, and an event unlike ANY other in the history of the Birth Photography Industry!

A Note of Caution:

This event is an educational one where live feedback will be given with care, love and tact, however, it is likely not an event you should participate in if you are not ready for honest feedback that has every intention to help you better your skill from the deepest parts of the judges hearts. We all want our community to excel.

Invitation:

We invite you to participate in the Annual Birth Photographer of The Year Awards and the Birth Photographer’s Image of The Year Competition at the conclusion of this event.
