Judges’ Award Titles

A couple of years ago, we made changes to the structure of our categories and award titles since 2019. In addition to our returning four main categories of Birth Details, Labor, Delivery and Postpartum, we choose to continue to offer another category: Hardship & Loss. We removed the category of Fresh48 and added three additional subcategories under each main category: Black & White, Documentary and Fine Art. We are thrilled to be awarding so many new titles for this year’s competition because experience has taught us that there was always more entrants that are deserving of recognition than there were award titles.

Hardship & Loss 2023 Winner Overall

For the second time since the start of our annual competition, we opened entries to a special group of birth stories in an effort to honor and recognize the 1 in 4 birthing persons who experience miscarriage and/or infant loss. We understand the sensitivity of choosing a winner of this category because we believe all images (and families photographed) submitted deserve to be celebrated. Therefore, the winner of this category will select a nonprofit of their choice to receive 10% of the entry fees from its submissions. It is also notable that all timeline restrictions were removed for this category due to the sensitive nature of the events captured and our reverence for the timeline of grief and healing.

Thank you to our 2023  Competition Judges

We are thankful for the hard work of our judges, as narrowing down this year’s winners was no easy task. Winners were chosen on a point system and judged on technique, lighting, composition, emotional impact, creativity and storytelling. Judging a competition of almost 1,000 images is a large endeavor and we want to express our deepest appreciation for our judges’ time, effort, and willingness to share their talents.
