Judges’ Award Titles

A couple of years ago, we made changes to the structure of our categories and award titles since 2019. In addition to our returning four main categories of Birth Details, Labor, Delivery and Postpartum, we choose to continue to offer another category: Hardship & Loss. We removed the category of Fresh48 and added three additional subcategories under each main category: Black & White, Documentary and Fine Art. Hardship & Loss 2024 Winner Overall

We want to honor and recognize the 1 in 4 birthing persons who experience miscarriage and/or infant loss. We understand the sensitivity of choosing a winner of this category because we believe all images (and families photographed) submitted deserve to be celebrated. Therefore, the winner of this category will select a nonprofit of their choice to receive 10% of the entry fees from its submissions. It is also notable that all timeline restrictions were removed for this category due to the sensitive nature of the events captured and our reverence for the timeline of grief and healing.

Thank you to our 2024  Competition Judges

We are thankful for the hard work of our judges, as narrowing down this year’s winners was no easy task. Winners were chosen on a point system and judged on technique, lighting, composition, emotional impact, creativity and storytelling. Judging a competition of almost 1,000 images is a large endeavor and we want to express our deepest appreciation for our judges’ time, effort, and willingness to share their talents.

Jelina Sonnenberg
Expert Judge Panelist

Jelina Sonnenberg is an ever evolving human being constantly learning which then translates into everything she does. From birth work to bereavement work, birth photography and videography, to mentoring and even parenting. She received her BA in Human Development/Counseling Services with the intent to pursue a career in therapy but ended up changing her path after experiencing the birth of her first in 2017. She recently moved to Central Illinois from San Diego with her family to chase their dreams and live life just a little bit slower.

She is a self proclaimed extroverted introvert, who thrives off realness and authenticity (with a dash of cussing and sarcasm), and snuggling any animal she can find. She believes in sustainability in birth work, showing value, and cultivating deep relationships with those she’s in community with. Because at the end of the day, this work is not something that can truly be done alone.

She is a fierce mamma bear to her one little boy and married to her best friend.

Shea Long
Photographer/ Doula / Mentor
Shea was completing her photography degree in 2013 when she documented her first birth story. The experience was one of the most moving and impactful moments of her life, and she decided that photographing births, and supporting families through their journey to parenthood was how she wanted to spend the rest of her life. She is now an international award winning photographer and doula at Coastal Lifestyles Photography located on beautiful Vancouver Island BC. Her work can be found in many publications such as  Elle Magazine and Today’s Parent, and featured on sites such as Huffington Post, Daily Mail, Positive Birth Movement and many more.

When she isn’t photographing bumps, birth and babies, Shea can be found hiking and exploring the Pacific Northwest with her partner Greg and their two coonhounds or drinking an earl grey tea in the garden.
Dora Barens
Multi Awarded Birth Photographer

Dora Barens is an award-winning birth photographer from The Netherlands. As one of the first birth photographers of the country, she’s been documenting birth stories since 2011 and it has become her mission to put this industry on the map in The Netherlands. Her work has been featured in countless national and international publications and she’s also a past winner of the IAPBP Image Competition.

Dora loves to capture the emotional roller coaster of giving birth in a discreet yet powerful way. As Amsterdam’s leading birth photographer she enjoys working in the multicultural environment of the city and the quite unique Dutch midwifery care system makes her work even more interesting.

Dora is a native Hungarian but she’s living in The Netherlands with her Dutch husband and their two teenage children.

Carmen Bridgewater
International Winning Birth Photographer

I am a wife, mother, and birth photographer from the Midwest creating provocative art below the Mason Dixon line. I draw inspiration from the diaspora – how we interact with the world around us and vice versa; how we both challenge societal views of us as well as reclaim negative stereotypes as our own. My art is boldly political and beautifully subversive.

Krista Evans
Birth Photographer
Krista Evans is an internationally published and award winning birth photographer based out of Kelowna British Columbia, Canada.

When she’s not capturing birth stories, she spends her time at the barn enjoying the horses with her beautiful daughter and husband.

She believes that the littlest breaths within birth are the most honest and also the most remarkable and she finds such joy in documenting them!
Jaydene Freund
Award Winning Birth Photographer

Jaydene Freund is an award winning birth photographer and filmmaker located in Vancouver, Canada. After co-founding Canadian Birth Photographers in 2011, she has enjoyed the challenge of mentoring and building the birth photography industry up across Canada. Freund won IAPBP Image of the Year in 2017 for her image titled “Road to Deliverance.”

MARIJKE THOEN
Birth and Motherhood Photographer

Marijke Thoen , Birth & Motherhood photographer

Marijke Thoen is a Belgian based birth & motherhood photographer. Marijke has been active as a birth photographer since 2008. She won the annual IAPBP competition in 2016 and 2018, amongst many other International Awards. With the award-winning-image from 2018 being banned from social media she took action which eventually resulted in Fb and IG changing their policies and allowing uncensored birth images on their platforms.

Currently working on a book project, with real, raw and honest portraits of mothers. With these portraits it is her goal to empower mothers, and women in general, to see the beauty and sacredness of their perfectly imperfect bodies.

When not behind her camera, Marijke likes to spend time on the yoga mat or in nature. She enjoys to have deep conversations about life with her beloved teenagers and watch sunsets with her Brazilian girlfriend.

Brittney Hogue
Birth Photographer

Brittney Hogue began as a birth photographer in Central Illinois in 2016 and has been a member of the IAPBP since 2017. She has become a well known name throughout the Midwest in the birth niche for both photography and videography. Brittney believes documentary imagery can serve as a self-expressive tool of intrinsic processing. By art-making with birthing people, the opportunity exists to influence the narratives which are adopted surrounding their experiences. Brittney therefore believes birth photography exists not only to enrich the birthing experience, but to be a platform to amplify marginalized voices, as well as a way for birthing people to assert their autonomy in historically limiting spaces.

Brittney currently lives in Pekin, IL with her partner, three children, three cats, two dogs, a large real-life TBR, and larger than life dreams. She is currently pursuing higher education to obtain the designation of Registered Art Therapist in the state of Illinois and hopes to contribute research in the future on the effects of art-making in the processing of traumatic perinatal experiencing.

Sunday Tortelli
DONA Birth and Doula, Certified Birth Doula

Sunday Tortelli is a DONA Approved Birth Doula trainer, DONA Advanced Certified Birth Doula, past President of DONA International and current member of the DONA Certification Committee. She is certified as a childbirth educator with BirthWorks International, the HypnoBirthing Institute, Lamaze International, and Spinning Babies.
